As with his innovative ‘Kite’ series of paintings incorporating three-dimensional elements, Smith is here exploring ways of creating a sense of depth in the strictly two-dimensional format of a screen print. The red grid in the upper background is partially hidden in a space behind the square of cross-hatching marks while below, the grid appears to be moving nearer to the right-hand edge of the print towards the viewer.
