Towards by Roger Barnard

The painting Towards was included in the Whitechapel Gallery's 'The New Generation' exhibition in 1966. It was described by Robert Hughes in the exhibition catalogue:
'Complimentary colour....sets up a fast, evanescent series of after images, some painted and others optical illusion. The colour pulsation of Towards is brilliantly managed; the shapes seem to climb inwards towards the dark centre, but at the same time there is a progressive dematerialisation of paint into light as you read it from the centre outwards.'
