"01.17" by Sax Impey
|
In Impey's work the formal, narrative, sensual and expressive qualities of painting are rejected. His focus is on the process of making and he employs a rigorous procedure which, nevertheless, allows for the intrusion of chance. This example is based on a fine grid of lines on which marks are painstakingly applied, partially removed and repeatedly overpainted. The effect for the viewer is of a mysterious, unstable surface with shimmering layers of light and shade. These are contemplative works inviting calm attention.
01.17 was purchased in 2002 by the Friends of the Mead.
