Born in Cookham, Berkshire, Spencer was one of the most original, eccentric and distinctive of 20th century British artists. He combined an individual style with a visionary quality to create works of great strength. During the First World War he worked with the Medical Corps and commemorated his experiences in a cycle of murals at Burghclere. During the Second World War he was commissioned to record ship builders at work on the Clyde. This portrait was produced towards the end of Spencer's life. Miss Browne, the sitter has commented: 'After two sessions the portrait was finished and I was very pleased with it and glad that we had decided on a modest pencil sketch by a great artist and so did not exhaust his energy, for time was running out for Stanley.'
