This work demonstrates Oulton's concern with the paint surface. The work has a mysterious quality, the surface of which appears to have been veiled by a gauze curtain. Oulton's paintings have links with the tradition of landscape painting. They have been likened to the work of a number of earlier artists including Turner, Watteau and Gainsborough.
