Passages: Between Sea and Sky by Tricia Gillman
|
Presented by the Contemporary Art Society, 1989
Unlike the previous painting First Light with its energy and vibrant, textured colours, Passages: Between Sea and Sky creates a different mood with its more subtle colouring and closer tonal values. While in the former work there is the impression of a view from an interior of a space beyond, this piece has a less clear suggestion of perspective. It requires a different kind of focus, inviting immersion in the space, the eye being free to move around the picture plane to explore the scattered signs, marks and symbols and speculate about meaning or significance.
