Learning Grid Leamington
The works in the University of Warwick Art Collection date from the middle of the twentieth century and the items installed in the Learning Grid Leamington illustrate some of the ways in which artists during this period have approached still life. The subjects are from the traditional repertoire of still life art, such as flowers, kitchen utensils, food and items of furniture. These works range from the simplified interpretations of familiar objects to highly realistic images in a variety of different media.
We have included: two screen prints by the artist Patrick Caulfield which are typical of his characteristic style, showing everyday objects pared down to flat areas of colour with strong black outlines; a stylised screen print by Derrick Greaves, using only black, white and grey tones to produce his Black Vase; two oil paintings by artists who were clearly influenced by cubism, The Window by Jacob Bornfriend, and the domestic interior Still Life with Peppers by Alison Daubercies; Untitled by David Thomas, painted in the photorealist style using gloss paint on board and three enigmatic photographs by Mari Mahr, amongst others.
