Supporting the development of the AI Toolkit

Background

The aim of this project was to develop a dynamic and discipline-specific AI Toolkit tailored for the Arts and Social Sciences Faculties. The ToolkitLink opens in a new windowLink opens in a new window has been designed to both curate and advance AI-related pedagogical practices. The initiative was a collaborative effort, developed in partnership with faculty staff and students, and supported by the Digital Learning team.

Challenge

The project team faced several challenges, including how to design a toolkit that would be accessible and relevant to two distinct faculties, while also serving both staff and student audiences. There were also technical considerations around how to structure and present complex content in a user-friendly way. David Voss and Louise Turtle from Digital Learning provided expert guidance to translate the project team's ideas into a functional and engaging digital platform.

Solution

David and Louise played an integral role throughout the development process. They:

  • Interpreted the project team’s ideas and helped to translate them into a clear, intuitive web design.
  • Facilitated regular meetings to share updates and refine the toolkit based on feedback from staff and student roundtables.
  • Provided technical setup and design support, ensuring the platform was both functional and visually aligned with the project’s goals.
  • Supplied online guides that were shared with content creators across both faculties.
  • Helped rationalise the dual-audience approach, offering design and technical solutions to balance the needs of staff and students.

Their continued involvement, including support with implementing final feedback, has been instrumental in shaping the toolkit’s success.

Testimonial of Fiona Wallace

"We have an excellent design for the AI Toolkit as a direct result of input from Louise and David. Their ability to interpret our vision and provide practical, creative solutions has been invaluable.

David, in particular, has shown a genuine investment in the success and sustainability of the project and is continuing to assist us in implementing feedback on the design which is the final stage of our project."

Conclusion

Collaboration with the Digital Learning Team was central to the successful development of the AI Toolkit. Our technical expertise, design insight, and ongoing support enabled the project team to overcome key challenges and deliver a resource that is accessible, engaging, and fit for purpose. The result is a toolkit that reflects the complex interaction of AI in higher education while remaining easy to navigate and use.
