Andrew Robinson - Estates
Interview with Andrew Robinson, Apprentice Electrician, Estates
Tell us a bit about the type of work you’ve been doing?
I have been assisting with the electrical team maintaining systems across the campus. The installation work is done separately, but the maintenance side of the job is varied and I’ve been working on fire alarms, emergency lighting and electrical systems.
Why did you decide to become an apprentice?
I wanted to learn a trade to ensure I had a good knowledge in something that I was interested in and where I would enjoy progressing my career.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship at Warwick?
Warwick is well-known, nationally and internationally, and I’m delighted to have had the opportunity to work for such a big institution, particularly when many of my college classmates are with smaller organisations. It’s been a pleasure to learn my trade here.
What’s been the highlight of your apprenticeship so far?
It’s been great learning from so many different electricians. They have a lot of knowledge and it’s great to feel that all that knowledge is coming together to help me understand my trade even better.
Tell us about your plans for the future?
I hope that once my apprenticeship is completed I can gain full time employment at the University to continue learning and building to be the best electrician I can be.
What would you say to someone who was considering joining an apprenticeship?
There’s starting to become a shortage in skilled people in some areas – get on board now, so you don’t regret it later!
