Danny Westley - Warwick Medical School

Interview with Danny Westley, Finance Assistant, Warwick Medical School

Tell us a bit about your current role?

My current role is in the Finance team of Warwick Medical School. My role mainly involves processing transactions such as purchase orders, invoices, expense claims and raising invoices to customers. I also run a variety of reports on a regular basis as well as having the opportunity to help colleagues on other tasks.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship at Warwick?

When I came for my first interview I was immediately impressed with both the University campus and the facilities of the Medical School – they were much more professional then anything I had come across before! I also knew a few other people who at the time had worked with the University and they only had positive things to say.

What happened as your apprenticeship was drawing to a close?

I actually completed the final months of my apprenticeship at WMG. It was a good experience to work within a different department of the University and I felt that helped with my development too. I received certificates for completing my course and attended an awards afternoon with other Apprentices.

Shortly after I completed my apprenticeship an opportunity came up to return to WMS. As I had really enjoyed my first stint at WMS I took the opportunity to come back, and have now been working in a full time role here for almost 2 and a half years.

What were some of the highlights of your apprenticeship?

There were many highlights during my apprenticeship, but the things that mainly stick in my mind would be the support and encouragement of my colleagues as I was progressing and improving. I noticeably felt my confidence improve throughout my apprenticeship as I got more used to a working environment.

What are your plans for the future?

Going forward, I plan to keep learning and progressing at the University.

What would you say to someone who was considering undertaking an apprenticeship?

I would say that doing an apprenticeship does require hard work, both at the workplace and with the qualification, however with this hard work it is a very rewarding path to take.

During my time at Warwick I have been very lucky to work with some great colleagues that have made me feel part of their team (which does help a lot), and there is no doubt in my mind that taking an Apprenticeship was the best route for me.
