There are eight public holidays a year in England, referred to as Bank Holidays, when all the banks and some shops close. They are all on weekdays; the precise dates of some will vary from year to year

Good Friday / Easter Monday | Immediately before and after Easter weekend (March or April) |
May Day | First Monday in May |
Spring Bank Holiday | Last Monday in May |
August Bank Holiday | Last Monday in August |
Christmas Day | 25th December |
Boxing Day | 26th December |
plus the first weekdays following these days if 25th / 26th December fall on a weekend |
