There are eight public holidays a year in England, referred to as Bank Holidays, when all the banks and some shops close. They are all on weekdays; the precise dates of some will vary from year to year

New Year's Day  1st January or first weekday in January
Good Friday / Easter Monday  Immediately before and after Easter weekend (March or April)
May Day  First Monday in May
Spring Bank Holiday  Last Monday in May
August Bank Holiday  Last Monday in August
Christmas Day  25th December
Boxing Day  26th December
  plus the first weekdays following these days if 25th / 26th December fall on a weekend
