Education and Schools
If your child is aged between 4 and 16, he/she can attend state-run primary and secondary schools in the UK, but the child must have entered the UK before the age of 18 as your dependant. You will not have to pay for this.
The academic school year starts at the beginning of September, and it will be easier for your child to integrate if they are attending from the start of the school year.
Schools
Primary Schools: These are for children aged 4 to 11 and usually have mixed classes of both girls and boys.
Secondary Schools: These are for children aged 11 to 16. Most secondary schools in England and Wales are comprehensive, meaning they do not operate a selective entrance system. All pupils are assessed by the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) at the age of 16.
Applying to a school
The University is 3 miles (5 kilometres) from Coventry city centre and on the border with Warwickshire. Both Coventry and Warwickshire have separate education authorities and admissions departments for schools. As a parent, it is your choice where to send your child to school, but this is dependant upon their being a place available. You are advised to do as much as possible to apply for a school place before you arrive in the UK to avoid any delay in your child starting school.
It is advisable to visit schools and talk to the Head Teacher before you make a decision about where to send your child.
Disabilities and specific learning difficulties
Should you have a child with a disability or a specific learning difficulty, you should make contact with the Local Education Authority as soon as possible to discuss how your child's needs might be met.
