Requesting Coaching for a team member
There are times when a line manager identifies the need for a team member to develop or adapt a specific practice, skill, or behaviour to succeed in their role. In such cases, the manager recognizes that the required support is not mentoring (providing advice and guidance) or training (enhancing technical competence), but rather coaching to address the specific development need. To facilitate this, the manager has arranged for a structured 3-way coaching process.
Unlike traditional 2-way coaching, 3-way coaching involves the manager actively contributing to the coaching agenda to ensure alignment with the team member’s development goals.
Before initiating a 3-way coaching relationship, the following steps must be completed:
- The line manager has had a clear and open conversation with the team member about their development needs or areas of concern, explaining how coaching can support their growth.
- The team member has agreed to participate in coaching and engage in a 3-way coaching process with a qualified coaching professional from the University of Warwick Internal Coaching Scheme.
