Communicate your Research: Planning your Publication Strategy

Overview:

What are the options for communicating your research in a digital environment? How is publishing evolving and how do you choose the most appropriate platform for your target audience? This series of Moodle ‘modules’ and related webinars will explore some of the options available to help you make informed choices when planning your publication strategy.

This first ‘virtual workshop’ will encourage you to think about your own motivations for publishing, who your target audience is and what you want to achieve by communicating your research. As well as exploring a range of publication venues and practices, it will also look at external drivers, such as funder requirements, Open Access policies and the REF, which might influence where, when and how you publish your work.

Who should attend?

University of Warwick Research Active Staff (staff on Research-focussed, Teaching-focussed and Research & Teaching Contracts) and PhD Students.

How the course works:

  • You can work through the Moodle module independently in your own time (this should take about an hour)
  • Attendance at a webinar is not required. This is an opportunity to have a structured conversation about planning a publication strategy with your peers, facilitated by the Library’s Scholarly Communications Manager.
  • The webinars will not repeat material in the online course, so you are advised to complete the Moodle module before booking onto a webinar

The webinars will usually be scheduled approximately two weeks after the release of each module. Further webinars will be offered if enough expressions of interest are received. One-to-one appointments are also available.

Workshop Objectives:

In this session, you can expect to:

  • Reflect on the current publishing environment and identify your own reasons for publishing your research
  • Explore different publication venues and assess their suitability for your own requirements
  • Learn more about sector-wide and institutional policies that might influence your publication decisions
  • Consider how you can maximise the dissemination of your publications and evaluate their impact
  • Start to develop a plan for communicating your research
