Research Active Staff (RAS): Public Engagement - Giving Great Public Engagement Presentation Skills
Overview:
Join us for a session where we discuss top tips for engaging the public through your research presentations. We’ll talk about some different styles of presenting commonly used at public engagement events (e.g Pecha Kucha, or “TED Talk” style), as well as talking about summarising a difficult topic into a presentation without needing to “dumb down” research.
As part of the session we’ll invite you to present part of an upcoming presentation you may have (1 or 2 slides in no more than 5 minutes), to give you the chance to hear feedback from the group on how you can improve.
Who Should Attend?
University of Warwick Research Active Staff (Research focussed, Teaching focussed and Research & Teaching focused contracts) and PhD Students.
Anyone who wants to deliver presentations to a non-specialist audience as part of their public engagement.
Workshop enable attendees to:
- To provide an overview of different presentation styles you might not have thought of
- To provide you useful tips for presenting to a public audience
- To help you consider who your public are, and what kind of presentation works for them
- To give you the opportunity to share part of a presentation and receive feedback from critical friends.
Feedback and quotes from the previous 'Giving Great Public Engagement Presentations' workshop:
"Doing the mock presentation to your colleagues from different disciplines was an extremely useful exercise, and would benefit a future public engagement event.”
Feedback (with responses from LDC) from 25 April 2018 and 4 May 2018 cohort
