Introduction to Infographics

This will be a one-day participative workshop, introducing delegates to the fundamentals of infographics design.

Infographics provide a great way of communicating insight in reports, on social media, in presentations, on posters. We will consider all the factors that have an impact on the infographic you end up with and look at the steps you need to go through to get to a good result.

The day will involve both theory, explained with illustrated case studies as well as pen and paper exercises so you can explore ideas and learn for yourself.

While we will discuss the tools available for creating infographics the emphasis of the day will be on coming up with a good idea for any given situation rather than mastering the tools to create the final work.

Who should attend?
The workshop is recommended for Research Active Staff (Research, Academic or Teaching terms & conditions).
We do not accept applications from postgraduates or research students. Students should refer to the Student Career and Skills website for details of workshops designed specifically to meet their needs.

Workshop Objectives:

  • How, why and when to use an infographic
  • Defining a clear story
  • Recognising suitable material to work with
  • Optimising infographics for different media and audiences
  • Understanding the role of design
  • Confidence to have a go

By the end of the workshop delegates will have:

  • Improved understanding of infographics
  • Practical application of knowledge about infographics
  • Understanding the steps to develop an infographic

Is there anything else I need to know:
Please print out and bring with you a couple of examples of infographics that you will have found to be good or bad, ideally from your field of work though it doesn't have to be your own. This will form the basis of discussions around definitions, challenges and aspirations.

Quotes from previous 'Introduction to Infographics' delegates
Feedback from the June 2016 attendees
'I recently attended a new Introduction to Infographics 1 day training programme at the University. It was really useful in helping me to understand the importance of creating a storyboard for the effective dissemination of research findings. The trainer was very knowledgeable and shared lots of useful resources and helpful tips on how to develop one's expertise in using infographics to good effect'.
Dr Deirdre Hughes OBE, Principal Research Fellow, Institute for Employment Research (IER).
