Academic Writing: Making the Most of Sabbatical Time

Many researchers with teaching duties will be looking to take sabbatical time in the next few years, so as to complete projects for submission to REF. This workshop aims to help you make best use of sabbatical time or any extended period in which you intend to complete a written research project.

The workshop will invite established researchers to share knowledge of their own sabbatical practises and generate tips, good practice guidelines and even tailored schematics where possible, or through follow up one-to-one sessions.

Who should attend?
Research Active Staff (Research, Academic or Teaching terms & conditions) expecting to take sabbaticals in the next year or two, or any staff planning extending writing time (even during teaching terms).
We do not accept applications from postgraduates or research students. Students should refer to the Student Career and Skills website for details of workshops designed specifically to meet their needs.

Workshop objectives:

  • To translate project management skills into writing goals
  • To explore and respond to some of the key challenges that arise over long writing periods, from blockage to procrastination to perfectionism
  • To share knowledge with experienced researchers who have maximised their output during sabbaticals or similar time off for writing
  • To discuss and share knowledge on how to managing ongoing duties against research deadlines
  • To equip you with the means to produce an achievable, ambitious writing strategy and plan
