Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International)

Mike Shipman is the Pro-Vice Chancellor (International), and has responsibility for the academic leadership of the development and delivery of the international strategy in line with the University’s ambitions. Mike previously was Chair of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Medicine. He provided oversight of 10 Academic Departments, supporting them deliver education and training to over 10,000 students from across the globe.

Mike Shipman is a chemical scientist who has taught and undertaken research in the field of organic chemistry for over 25 years. He was educated at Imperial College London and undertook postdoctoral studies at Colorado State University, USA under a NATO Fellowship. He held academic positions at the Universities of Loughborough and Exeter before joining the University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and Chartered Chemist (FRSC, CChem). He is a past recipient of the RSC Meldola Medal (1996), an EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship (1999-2004) and served as Head of Department (2010-14). He has published >100 research papers on the preparation and uses of heterocycles, compounds which underpin many advances in human medicine, crop protection, biotechnology, and material science.
