How to chop an onion

Many recipes require a chopped onion, so learning this skill will take you far!

Method

  1. Cut off the top of the onion
  2. Place it upright and cut down the middle
  3. Peel the two halves and lay them cut side down

For thin slices:

  1. For large onions, you can cut them into quarters
  2. Then make parallel slices from the cut side (not the roots)

For rough dice:

  1. Place the cut half side down and make several slices lengthwise from the top, without cutting all the way to the roots.
  2. Now, place the knife parallel to the chopping board and cut along the side of the onion at several points, without cutting all the way to the roots.
  3. Make parallel slices from the cut side, avoiding the roots.
