Cooking Basics - Tomato Sauce

How to make a tomato sauce

This basic tomato sauce could be used with pasta or as a pizza base to make a quick and easy meal.

Taste: Simplicity: Cost:

Ingredients

  • 1 tin of chopped tomatoes
  • Diced onion
  • Oil
  • 1 teaspoon of granulated sugar
  • Seasonings (I used garlic granules, basil and oregano)
  • Salt and Pepper

Method

  1. Heat the oil in the saucepan on a medium heat.

  2. Add in your diced onion.
  3. After two minutes, add the tin of chopped tomatoes. If you want a smoother sauce, use tomato passata instead.
  4. Add salt, pepper and any seasonings (I used garlic granules, basil and oregano). If you want some spice, use chilli flakes as well!
  5. Add in the sugar and mix well.
  6. Leave the sauce to simmer for five minutes.
  7. If you're saving it for another day, place it in a bowl with a lid and let it cool before refrigerating. If not, it's ready to serve!
