Social and Cultural

It's not all about studying, in fact our Summer School is all about striking the right balance between working hard and playing hard! There are plenty of opportunities for you to socialise, relax and have fun.

Within the WSS programme, and included in the tuition fee, you can enjoy a variety of social events and activities. In addition we have a brilliant selection of additional activities and day-trips to enhance your time with us, they are only charged at cost and are a great opportunity to broaden your experience of British culture. There is also free time in your timetable for you to independently explore London and the UK, our team will always be on hand to assist you with arrangements or advice you might need.

Meet and Greet and Induction

Get to know your fellow WSS students at a relaxed welcome barbecue (hopefully outdoors in the lovely grounds at St Mary's) and familiarise yourself with the beautiful campus and facilities on our orientation tours.

Welcome Dinner at Twickenham Stadium

Welcome Dinner at Twickenham Stadium

A formal three course sit down dinner and welcome reception at the home of Rugby, Twickenham Stadium. Grab a drink and take photos with your friends overlooking the pitch at the largest dedicated rugby union venue in the world.

Curry, Karaoke and Disco

A great social night featuring a tasty curry, the chance to showcase your singing talents and a disco with our resident DJ.

Warwick Visit

A chance for everyone to visit the lovely University of Warwick campus, enjoy a tour and guest lecture along with some free time to explore campus.

Film Night

Held at St Mary's venue 'The Exchange.' Take a break after your study and watch a film with friends. Popcorn included!

Farewell and Afternoon Tea Reception

A final celebration with your new WSS friends, which includes a drinks reception and afternoon tea style canapes in the historical Waldegrave Hall and the stunning 17th Century Strawberry Hill House at St Marys'.

This "gothic castle" of Strawberry Hill House was the inspiration behind the first ever Gothic Novel, and is a truly breathtaking building, creating an exceptional and unforgettable backdrop for our final farewell in London.

Day Trip to London

Theatre Trip

Enjoy a trip to London's famous West End to see a fantastic show in the evening. Travel to and from campus will be arranged for students who wish to visit the theatre.

Oxford Visit

Visit the dreaming spires of Oxford for the day and take a historic walking tour that provides a great introduction to the city. Anyone looking to do some luxury designer shopping can head to Bicester Village too.

London Day-Trip

Brighton Visit

Explore the capital city of London and enjoy a trip on the London Eye and a river cruise along the Thames. You will also have free time to explore and find your favourite sights.

Brighton Visit

Our day trip to the vibrant seaside town of Brighton will give you the opportunity to take in the amazing seafront, culture, shopping and food for which Brighton is known. The visit will include a trip to the famously exotic Royal Pavilion.

The Making of Harry Potter

Discover the film making magic of Harry Potter at the Warner Bros. Studio in London. On this Studio tour you will be able to follow the footsteps of Harry, Ron and Hermione and travel down Diagon Alley, explore the Great Hall of Hogwarts and pose for photos on the Hogwarts Express or playing a game of Quidditch. Return coach travel will be provided for all students that choose to attend this magical tour.

Sports Activities

St Mary's has a strong reputation of performing at the top level of international and university sport and has excellent sports facilities. During the three weeks you have the opportunity to take part in sports activities in between your studying. You can also make use of the newly refurbished Fitness and Conditioning Suite and many other sports facilities whilst you are here.



We hold a number of organised football sessions for you to take a break from studying. Take to the football pitch for some exercise and friendly competition. Open to all levels of skill.

Running Club

Students can also join our informal Summer School Running Club. Open to all levels and abilities. A great way to see more of the local area, and an opportunity to run on the same athletics track as Olympic Gold Medallist and St Mary's University Alumnus, Sir Mo Farah.

Ultimate Frisbee

Open to all levels and abilities, join us for a number of organised ultimate frisbee games. A great opportunity to take a break from classes and have some fun with your new WSS friends.

Sports Centre and Gym Membership

Sports Centre access and a full gym membership is included in the accommodation fee for those staying on St Mary's campus. Additional activities may be an additional cost.
