Department of Sociology Green Team

The Department of Sociology established its Green Team in 2021–22 to embed environmental sustainability into departmental practices. Meeting once per term and reporting to the departmental meeting, the team drives initiatives that reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable behaviours among staff and students.

Key Actions and Initiatives

  • Student Engagement: A team of student sustainability ambassadors supports the Green Team by organising events and maintaininga sustainability blog on the department’s green webpages.

  • Sustainable Events: All departmental events feature vegetarian and vegan catering (with inclusion of dietary requirements to ensure the inclusivity of events),anda strong commitment to avoiding single-use items.

  • Low-Carbon Travel: Planned annual study tours ensure minimum associated carbon emissions.

  • Recycling Innovation: A dedicated recycling box in the common room collects items not handled by campus recycling, inspired by an initiative from WMG colleagues.

  • Curriculum Integration: Environmental sustainability principles are embedded into teaching and research activities across the department.

Impact

Through these actions, the Department of Sociology fosters a culture of sustainability, encouraging both staff and students to contribute to the University’s environmental goals.
