Governance in Action: How UWSP Is Structuring Sustainability for Long‑Term Impact
The University of Warwick Science Park (UWSP) is translating sustainability ambition into tangible action. By appointing Mihir Rathi through the University’s graduate scheme, UWSP has developed its first formal Sustainability Strategy, providing a clear roadmap towards a Net Zero-ready estate while strengthening governance across Science Park–related companies.
The strategy embeds environmental responsibility into operational oversight, capital planning, and performance monitoring, ensuring sustainability is a core consideration rather than a standalone initiative. By linking energy efficiency measures, data-driven reporting, and tenant engagement, UWSP is delivering measurable environmental outcomes while supporting innovation and collaboration across its business community.
The strategy is structured around four key pillars:
- Green Clauses in lease agreements: embedding sustainability requirements directly into tenant contracts ensures that environmental responsibility is a shared commitment across the Park community.
- Energy use: initiatives such as solar panel installations and improving EPC rating will reduce carbon emissions while supporting more efficient, cost-effective operations.
- Tenant engagement: a dedicated sustainability working group has been established, creating a forum for tenants to share best practice, collaborate on green initiatives, and contribute to the Park’s evolving strategy.
- Operations: from waste management to water efficiency, biodiversity and ongoing improvements to the EPC ratings of our buildings, sustainability is being embedded into the day-to-day running of the Park’s four sites.
This integrated approach demonstrates how sustainability can enhance resilience, competitiveness, and long-term value. UWSP’s work shows how a science park can lead in sustainable operations, align governance with environmental goals, and create meaningful benefits for tenants, the University, and the wider region.
