Our research is internationally leading. It transcends our campus community and delivers societal and environmental impact to help make lives healthier, safer, more resilient and more just.

The impact of our sustainable research spans many different sectors, such as energy, agriculture, economy, finance, transport, urban science, environment, policy, education, materials, manufacturing and technology.

Partnerships with business and industry have been a seminal part of our research landscape since our inception in 1965. We work collaboratively with business and industry to develop transformative and lasting solutions with real-world impact.

Our sustainability research extends beyond our region and the wider UK. Supported by the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), we create global partnerships that help tackle widespread health, environmental, political, economic and social problems. We partner with organisations from low and middle-income countries to help address some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Sustainable Development Goals

Our research responds to the challenges set out by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a global call for action to reduce poverty, protect the planet and promote peace and prosperity. Warwick is home to the Institute for Global Sustainable Development (IGSD), and we are one of only a few UK universities with an institute specifically focused on transformative research to help achieve the SDGs. Our researchers in this area work closely with partner countries – including local people, NGOs, healthcare providers, government and policymakers, which allows us to understand the local context, knowledge and experiences of those living in these countries.

As global sustainable development becomes increasingly important in the coming decades, this area will be given greater prominence in our research. History has shown us that traditional methods are not enough. Our interdisciplinarity strengths have elevated us to a strong position to further push the boundaries and ensure our research continues to deliver transformative impact.

Our researchers are now working across the university, across disciplines, working with the private sector, local governments and NGOs developing research that impacts on the world we live in. This number will continue to grow.
