The Global Illuminations Procession: Recycled Wings – Moths for the Procession

As part of Warwick’s 60th Anniversary, the Global Illuminations ProcessionLink opens in a new window project led by Together at Warwick organised two creative workshops titled Recycled Wings: Moths for the Procession on 19 and 20 May 2025 in FAB. Facilitated by artist Frances Yeung, the sessions invited staff, students and members of the University community to craft illuminated, wearable moth lanterns using only recycled and repurposed materials.

The materials used for this event included upcycled cardboard sourced from across campus and surplus face shields from the Covid period. The moths were designed using inspiration from species found on campus, including the Elephant Hawk moth, Black Arches moth and Green Carpet moth.

This hands-on activity demonstrated how creativity and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand, it is a low-impact, high-engagement approach to event planning and artistic expression.

The Energy and Sustainability Team teamed up with Together at Warwick and Theatre and Performance Studies to celebrate the nocturnal wildlife on campus and to link in with 'Warwick at NightLink opens in a new window' project. By combining upcycled materials, environmental education and community involvement, this project offered a meaningful and memorable experience for staff and students and also demonstrated Warwick’s commitment to sustainability.
