Our Strategy

Through this strategy, the University aspires to be a sector‑leading institution in environmental sustainability, embedding the topic across research, education, governance and operations and empowering our community to drive positive change locally, nationally and globally.

"This new strategy marks an important step forward in how we govern and embed sustainability across the University. Strengthening our sustainability governance has been central to this work, ensuring clearer accountability, greater transparency and visibility of sustainability priorities, progress, and impact, and better connection between university‑wide priorities and activity across education, research, and professional practice. By engaging colleagues and students in shaping this approach, we are creating the conditions for more coherent, impactful progress toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals." Professor Stéphanie Panichelli-Batalla, Academic Director for Sustainability

“With sustainability now established as the University’s fifth strategic goal, we took the opportunity to reassess our strategy, evaluate our progress, and determine how we could advance with greater purpose and ambition. Engaging closely with our staff and student communities was central to this process; their feedback strengthened our approach and reinforced our commitment to leading in sustainability across research, education, and campus operations.” Parvez Islam, Director of Environmental Sustainability and Infrastructure

"We are pleased to endorse this new Environmental Sustainability Strategy. We note the advances that Warwick has made, especially in regards to Circular Economy and in including students in the road to a more ethical and sustainable university. Of particular interest in this new strategy is a commitment to accountability and oversight mechanisms, to ensure that the University delivers on the promises made here." James Varney, VP Democracy and Development & Helena Ratcliffe, Environment and Ethics Officer, Warwick Students' Union

Our Journey So Far...

We are proud of the progress we have made since the launch of our first sustainability strategy, Way to Sustainable, in 2022.

Looking Back: How the Refreshed Sustainability Strategy Took Shape

Since November 2024, we’ve been working closely with our University community to refresh Warwick’s Sustainability Strategy. This has been a structured, evidence-led process grounded in listening, learning, and turning insight into action.

The refreshed strategy has been shaped over more than a year of consultation, analysis, and development. Each stage built on the last, ensuring the final strategy is both ambitious and grounded in real experiences across the University.

The consultation generated thoughtful ideas, constructive challenges, and important questions about how Warwick delivers sustainability in practice. Encouragingly, many of the themes raised are areas where work is already underway, or where projects and programmes are already delivering impact.

The refreshed strategy brings this activity together under a clear, shared framework; strengthening coordination, sharpening focus, and setting out how we will measure progress over the coming years.

To ensure the strategy reflects the diversity of perspectives at Warwick, we engaged widely with staff and students using a mix of quantitative and qualitative approaches. These included:

  • University-wide student survey

  • A series of listening sessions, including workshops and listening rooms with:
    • Academic staff from departments across the University

    • Professional services staff

    • Students and student societies

  • Targeted discussions with senior leaders and external stakeholders

This approach allowed us to capture both high-level priorities and on-the-ground insights.

As we launch our new Environmental Sustainability Strategy, we do so with a strong foundation built by our community and a clear direction for what comes next.
