FILM SCREENING AND CONVERSATION WITH ORAIB TOUKAN

The artist Oraib Toukan will be speaking about her work, in particular When Things Occur: a 'desktop film' based on Skype conversations with Gaza inhabitants over the summer of 2014. This powerful and topical film probes the face of mourning and grief – its digital embodiment, transmission, and representation. It asks how the gaze gets channeled within the digital realm, how empathy travels, who is 'local' in the representation of war, and what it means to view suffering 'at a distance'.
The film will be made available from Friday 17 to Wednesday 22 July via a protected Vimeo link for all those who register. We are very excited to be able to show this rarely screened film. We encourage you to view it in advance (28 min), so as to facilitate discussion on the day. The event will begin with an introductory discussion between Toukan and Naomi Vogt, followed by a Q&A. All students and faculty are warmly invited to join.

Oraib Toukan is an artist and scholar based at the Forum Transregionale Studien (EUME), Berlin. She holds a PhD in Fine Art from the University of Oxford, Ruskin School of Art. Recent exhibitions include the Asia Pacific Triennial, the Mori Art Museum, Akademie der Künste, Berlin, Heidelberger Kunstverein, and CCA Glasgow. Until 2015, she was head of the Arts Division and Media Studies program at Bard College at Al Quds University, Palestine and was visiting faculty at the International Academy of Fine Arts in Ramallah. Toukan is the author of the book Sundry Modernism (Sternberg Press, 2017), and of the essay-film When Things Occur (2016).
