Melchior Discography
This page lists every KNOWN recording of the great Danish Heldentenor Lauritz Melchior in live performance, either on the stage, or on radio or TV. It is quite possible that future live recordings of Melchior, especially in the 1950s, will emerge from private collectors.
Considering that Tristan was Melchior's most performed role, and the one for which he was famous, it is fitting that there are no less than 14 complete recordings of him in the role. In addition there are numerous complete acts or extracts from the opera which survive.
Of his other Wagnerian roles Lohengrin (with 8 complete recordings), Walkure (6), and Tannhauser (5), are the best documented. For Siegfried, Gotterdammerung and Parsifal there is only one complete recording of each opera, though for Gotterdammerung there are several extracts from additional performances that survive.
No live recordings of of Melchior's non-Wagnerian roles (Florestan, Otello, Pagliacci) are known to survive, though there are rumours that a complete Otello from Covent Garden in 1939 does exist.

18 April 1963 * Concert: Adelphi University Melchior sings, with Stokowski conducting the American SO, at Adelphi University in New Jersey. Melchior is chairman of the Adelphi College Opera Association. He sings "Winterstürme" and "Ich Liebe Dich." (the latter appeared on EJS GAO 322) This is a benefit concert for a proposed Cultural Center for the Performing Arts at the college.
June 1963 Concert, Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen: Melchior sings Midsommervise (Lange-Muller), Flaget (Rygard) and Jeg elsker dig (Grieg)
Melchior also made these commercial recordings, which cover a large number of Wagnerian extracts, as well as those from other operas. In addition there are numerous songs which Melchior performed live in concert. Of particular interest are Act 1 and 2 of Die Walkure, the 'potted' Siegfried which contains about 2/3 of the opera, the extracts from Otello recorded in 1942-3, as well as the lengthy extract from Act 3 of Tristan recorded at the same time.

8. Walküre Acts 1 and 2, Vienna 1935, Berlin 1938
The HMV Walküre project has its own cloudy history. Original plans were to record the complete opera in Berlin. But when Bruno Walter, Emanuel List and Lotte Lehmann for political reasons neither could nor would go to the German capital, Act 1 and those parts of Act 2 including Lehmann and List were done in Vienna in 1935 (but not Sieglinde's brief 3rd Act appearance which would have included all nine Valkyries). Bruno Walter conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Then in 1938 the balance of Act 2 was realized, now with Bruno Seidler-Winkler conducting the Berlin State Opera Orchestra, with Melchior completing the part of Siegmund, and with Hans Hotter as Wotan. As Hotter had been quite unknown at the time the project was conceived (actually he did not sing Wotan in Walküre on stage until 1941), and as Alfred Jerger, who does the brief fill-in in Vienna, is not a logical candidate for a complete Wotan, the producers must had another god in mind. Obvious guesses are Friedrich Schorr and Rudolf Bockelmann.
The cast further includes Ella Flesch (fill-in of Brünnhilde) and Margarete Klose (Fricka).
Act 1 appeared on HMV DB 2636-43 (2VH 94-109),
Act 2 appeared on HMV DB 3719-28 (2RA 3256,3260/65,3461/62, 2VH 110/14).
These albums could also be found on other labels as Columbia and Victor.
