Honours Level Modules

Below is a list of all modules available in to Undergraduates in English but these do not all run every year so for details of which modules are running in the next academic year, see the Undergraduate Current Options BookletLink opens in a new window

Below is a summary of the Department's undergraduate modules.

Not all option modules listed will necessarily be offered every year and new modules may be added every year. See the Undergraduate Current Options BookletLink opens in a new window

Please note that students not studying for literature degrees must normally have obtained a good pass in a literary A-level before taking a course offered by this Department.

There are restrictions on which modules students from outside of the department can and cannot take. You should make sure you know what these before making your final choice.

First-year modules

These modules are open to any English studies / Joint degree students who did not take them in their first year, and any students from outside the department.

EN101 Epic into Novel (EN2J4/EN3J4) (Honours variant available for those who don't take it in year one)

EN121 Medieval and Early Modern Literature (EN2J5/EN3J5) (Honours variant available)

EN122 Modes of Reading (EN2J6/EN3J6) (Honours variant available)

EN123 Modern World Literatures (EN2J7/EN3J7) (Honours variant available)

  • These two modules are not open to other students at any level.

EN107 British Theatre since 1939 - English and Theatre students only

Note 1: Intermediate (2nd year) Q300 English students must take a module that is specified to fall into the Pre-1900 category (see Theme). These are also outlined on the "Degree Structures" page.

Note 2: Finalist (3rd year) Q300 English students must take a module that is specified to fall into the Global Literature category (see Theme - Global Lit). These are also outlined on the "Degree Structures" page.

Note 3: Intermediate (2nd year) VQ32 English and History students must take 30 CATS worth of optional core module(s) that fall in the Early Modern History categories from either English department (see Theme - Early Modern) or History department.


EN3E0 Dissertation Module

This module is available to final year (including intercalated finalist English Studies) students registered on English, English and Theatre Studies, Film and Literature, Philosophy and Literature, English and Classics, English and French, English and German, English and Italian, English and Hispanic Studies, English and Cultural Studies.

Please note that English and History students have a compulsory dissertation specific to their degree.

Please note the "Research Project" that was compulsory for Q300 Finalists in 2022/23 is no longer running from 2023/24. You may choose to do the EN3E0 optional dissertation or any other module as well as your optional core of a Global Literature module (see "Degree Structures").

15 CATS Optional modules

These modules will only be available in either Term 1 or Term 2. The options booklet for the coming academic year will also indicate which term they will be running.
