ABSTRACT
This presentation takes the opening of the Brook Advisory Centres in London and Birmingham, the first centres to provide contraceptive advice to young unmarried people, as a comparative case-study to explore the relationship between sexual culture and sexual politics. This presentation assesses whether Brook centres resulted from the traditional will to monitor teenage female sexuality due to fears over young women’s increasing autonomy – Helen Brook hence positioning herself as a ‘moral entrepreneur’ – or whether they resulted from the will to value youths’ search for sexual pleasure.
