The History of Mental Health Care in Post-War Britain

The Centre for the History of Medicine at Warwick has been collaborating with the Centre for the History of Emotions at Queen Mary, University of London, and with other historians, psychiatrists, psychologists, and policy-makers to investigate the history of mental health care in post-war Britain, particularly the relatively uncharted period since 1970. This has been assisted by funding from the Wellcome Trust for a series of witness seminars in 2010-11. These meetings provided the opportunity to discuss the history of post-war mental health care with historians, policy makers, psychiatrists, psychologists, and service users.

Collaborators include:

Dr Katherine Angel (Wellcome Post-Doctoral Fellow, CHM Warwick)

Professor Bill Fulford (Professor Philosophy and Mental Health, Warwick Medical School)

Professor John Hall (Visiting Professor of Mental Health, School of Health and Life Sciences, and Research Associate, Centre for Health, Medicine and Society, Department of History, Philosophy and Religion)

Dr Rhodri Hayward (Centre for the History of Emotions, Queen Mary, University of London)

Chris Millard (PhD Student, Queen Mary, University of London)

Jim Symington (Symington-Tinto Health and Social Care Consultancy)

Dr Mathew Thomson (CHM, Warwick)

Professor John Turner (Emeritus Professor, Department of Health Care Management and Policy, University of Surrey & Hon. Professorial Fellow, Queen Mary, University of London)
