Film Screening

Public Film Screening and Panel Discussion

In February 2026, we held a public screening and panel discussion of the rare Ukrainian health education film For Women, About Women (directed by Ivha Hryhorovych, 1930).

The event showcased the pioneering ways Ukrainian artists and scientists have used film to draw public attention to women’s health. The screening was accompanied by an original musical score by the Berlin sound artist Jakob Metzger and was followed by a panel discussion and an audience Q&A.

Prof. Nick Hopwood (Cambridge) placed the film within the wider context of 'reproduction on film’; Dr Rachel Morley (UCL) situated it within the history of Ukrainian filmmaking and women’s film; Dr Anna Toropova (Warwick) discussed the medical historical context and the genre of health enlightenment film; and Sophie Ahlemeyer (Warwick) connected the film to media engagement with women’s health issues, past and present.

The event was generously supported by Warwick’s Institute of Engagement and CHMST.
