Spanish 4 (LL224)
Summary
Level:
This module will be offered to undergraduates who already have a good knowledge of Spanish (i.e. 5/6 years, rusty A-level Spanish or equivalent) or have successfully completed learning Spanish 3.
Main Objectives:
These modules will strengthen reading and writing skills and will also reinforce the communicative skills acquired during previous study of the Spanish language. Students will gain further insights into the cultures and societies of the Spanish-speaking world. These modules will offer a more advanced study of language structure and syntax and concentrate on using the target language for discussing and analysing topical issues in Spanish-speaking countries.

30 CREDITS, also available for 24 CREDITS
Teaching:
One 2-hour language class each week for 21 weeks
Students are reminded that 1 credit = 10 hours of study, therefore the minimum expected amount of study is 240 hours, which averages over 10 hours per week. A substantial amount of independent study is therefore required. Students can make use of Languages@Warwick (a virtual learning environment) to facilitate this.

The module is taught entirely in Spanish. Texts from Spanish resources, video and audio relating to Spain and Latin America form the basis of an intensive and active learning experience.
Recommended: English-Spanish Dictionary, Collins/OUP Spanish-English.
Course Description
Teaching will be primarily in the target language.
Writing and speaking activities will be supported by authentic written and spoken materials focusing on aspects of Spanish/Latin American life and culture. Students will also be encouraged to read regularly the magazines and newspapers available in the Language Centre to keep up to date with events in the Spanish-speaking world.
Successful completion of Spanish 4 qualifies students to progress to Spanish 5.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- apply a basic knowledge of grammar appropriate to the level
- develop strategies for locating information and understanding structure
- understand and produce the main ideas of complex text on concrete and abstract topics
- understand extended speech in a variety of contexts, and the gist of most current affairs programmes and films (including implied meaning)
- read articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems:
- interact with fluency and spontaneity, and account for and sustain viewpoints
- write clear detailed text on a wide range of subjects; explain viewpoints on topical issues, giving advantages and disadvantages
By the end of the course, students should be able to perform many tasks at Level B2 Independent user (vantage) of the Common European Framework.

Communicative skills
The course will cover items such as: giving advice; talking about past events; expressing disagreement; expressing commands; making wishes; encouraging people; expressing opinions; congratulating; expressing resignation; expressing regrets; asking for specific information; expressing gratitude; accepting and rejecting invitations.
Grammar
The course will cover items such as: consolidation and revision of structures such as past tenses, conditional, future tense, imperative, present subjunctive; ser and estar; contrast between indicative and subjunctive.
Topics
The course will cover topics such as: education; travelling; feelings; the future and mysterious phenomena.
