The Shirley canon has been under critical debate at least since the days of Malone. In certain cases, current critical evidence is still inconclusive. We intend to take a fresh look at the arguments for and against the inclusion of these works. To arrive at the best possible critical assessment, we will defer our decision on doubtful cases until after the general editors and contributors have worked extensively on the established Shirley canon. We expect some additions from Ib but few – probably none – from Ic
Furthermore, Shirley is credited with having written The True Impartial History and Wars of the Kingdom of Ireland (two 12° edns 1692), according to WING and NUC pre-1956 imprints. As the bulk of this History engages with the period after 1666, the year of Shirley’s death, it seems doubtful that the work is his. However, a full assessment of the situation is currently being made to determine if it should be included.
