Introductory Note

This biographical dictionary is designed to make accessible some of the research material accumulated by the late Professor Michael Mallett and Dr Humfrey Butters in the course of editing the letters of Lorenzo de’ Medici (d 1492) for the Istituto Nazionale di Studi sul Rinascimento in Florence . Volumes V-VII, edited by Michael Mallett, cover the years 1480-4 and were published in 1989, 1990 and 1998. Volumes VIII-IX, edited by Humfrey Butters, contain correspondence from 1484-6 and were published in 2001 and 2002.

The dictionary not only presents a minority of the source material researched for the published volumes of correspondence; it also represents a small part of the ongoing Lettere project, of which there are already four published volumes covering the period from 1460 to 1480, and two for 1486-8. A further six volumes are currently being prepared for publication.

The core of each entry in this dictionary consists of references to individuals named by Lorenzo and his correspondents between April 1480 and November 1486 or by ambassadors in their dispatches during the same period. The Florentine political and mercantile elites are amply represented. When not otherwise stated, ‘the Otto’ refers to the Otto di Pratica, ‘the Dieci’ to the Dieci di Balia, ‘Lorenzo’ to Lorenzo de’ Medici and persons featured without reference to their geographical origin may generally be assumed to be Florentines. Most of the other major entries are devoted to political leaders, diplomats and senior ecclesiastics from elsewhere in Italy. Non-Italians are accorded more cursory treatment.

Archival references are generally given in some detail for the period before August 1484 but, in many cases, require amplification for the post-August 1484 material. This illustrates the ongoing nature of the project. In the case of more prominent individuals and those who were key players in the Laurentian circle, the archival references are supplemented by brief biographies and/or bibliographies. The database offers considerable scope for development and should be regarded as work in progress.

The work undertaken thus far has been made possible by the AHRB Centre for the Study of Renaissance Elites and Court Cultures and the Department of History, University of Warwick. The compilation of the dictionary has been mainly the work of Dr Jonathan Davies and Dr Stella Fletcher, with the assistance of other members of the Centre, including Dr Humfrey Butters, Professor Michael Mallett, and Dr Christine Shaw.
