Active learning through digitally enhanced teaching, learning and assessment
Overview
As a Digital Education Specialist, Mrs Emily Webb implements the Digitally Enhanced Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (DELTA) strategy to empower educators to support the effective use of educational technologies in ways that benefit student learning and outcomes. This enables the optimal use of technology to enhance pedagogy, delivering active, engaging, and supportive student learning. She is interested in developing online courses, knowledge delivery, professional identity within the third space, and enhancing learning through cultivating a sense of understanding and belonging.
Mr Dee Vyas has worked at Manchester Metropolitan University for over 30 years and has seen significant changes in the higher education landscape. As a Digital Education Specialist, he works across the university to implement the Digitally Enhanced Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (DELTA) strategy that supports developing and delivering a flexible and inclusive active learning approach. His passion in higher education is to develop a student-focused approach, that encompasses engagement, active learning, and the opportunity for all to participate. Alongside this, sits a need to address the needs of the modern student regarding well-being, compassion, and care.
The University Road to 2030 in line with the Education strategy aims to deliver a student experience based on developing an active learning community. Founded on engagement from across the university and key sector-wide reports, the Digitally Enhanced Learning Teaching and Assessment (DELTA) Strategy is a key enabler of many aspects of the university’s aspirations. Long-term feedback from our students consistently shows that they want to be more actively engaged in their learning rather than being passive recipients of information.
As part of developing the student experience, including rethinking and reformatting traditional lectures, the Apps for Teaching and Learning toolkit has been developed. Deploying digital tools institutionally has aimed to give university students personalisation, flexibility, and choice in what, where, when, and how they learn. Six institutional-licensed apps are available to use:
- Vevox
- Mentimeter
- Kahoot
- Padlet
- Nearpod
- Miro
Empowering students and educators to determine and develop the digital skills and fluency they require is central to the DELTA strategy. We will continue to work with colleagues across the university to identify and support skills gaps and revisit training requirements and curricula to strengthen digital skill sets and approaches to teaching, learning, and assessment.

Lesson plan
- Review current teaching practices to determine where active learning can form a part of student engagement, e.g., how student engagement can be enhanced using specific technologies as part of their current practice.
- Arrange a meeting with the Digital Education Team (or equivalent) to discuss and develop active learning requirements based on your institution's teaching, learning and assessment strategy.
- Test the new integrations to be implemented using the university's VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) and during face-to-face teaching to ensure that they create the desired types and levels of engagement.
- Review the outcomes of these tests in collaboration with tutors, students, and digital experts and iterate the interventions as required.
Tutor's observations
‘Really big focus on the E in DELTA in terms of enhancement for me, if it’s not enhancing, then it loses its cache. It’s not that relevant. So, it’s about making what we do better rather than just doing something for the sake of doing it.’
‘A lot of our students have lots of other responsibilities, they have caring responsibilities, some of them have to work, etc. That's really important. I think we have to make the assumption now that if they're missing a session, it's for good reason. This is a major part of DELTA, we have to be able to educate those students, as well as the ones that are turning up to every session. We can't leave these individuals with nothing, we've got to educate them, we've got to educate them well, and digital technology, and DELTA is a way of doing that. There are students that can make it onto campus and do make it onto campus regularly, it's a large proportion of our students, and we use digital technology when educating them as well.’
