Careers Event
The Careers event is called 'Where has Maths taken you?'.
It will feature a panel of maths PhDs in various career paths. They will each give a very short talk about how they got to where they are and how they use their PhD in their work. They will then answer questions from the floor.
It could be followed by a drink's reception, maybe sponsored by warwick careers? SMH to ask warwick careers.
David Hand has said yes, we should try to put it on the same day as he is speaking if poss. (DH)
Email to potential speakers at `Where has maths taken you' event, eg David Hand, vary a bit for others in obvious ways.(sent to D hand (DH))
Dear __
We are planning to hold an event entitled `Where has Mathematics Taken You?' at YRM 2011, where various people who have undertaken PhDs in mathematics will give a brief talk outlining where mathematics has taken them, and then answer a few questions from our conference delegates. The aim of the event is to provide our delegates, many of whom will be finishing PhDs in the near future, with some ideas of how they can build a career utilising their PhD. In addition to the keynote talk which you have kindly offered to give, would you be prepared to speak at this event? We can of course arrange for your talk to be on the same day as this event.
Best Wishes,

Dear GCHQ Recruitment,
I am writing to you on behalf of 'Young Researchers in Mathematics 2011', a conference organised by PhD students and aimed at both PhD students and young post-docs in mathematics. Following on from the previous successful conference in Cambridge earlier this year, YRM places the emphasis on the involvement of young researchers across a wide range of mathematical disciplines. Aside from plenary talks and around one talk per track from invited speakers, all the presentations are done by the young researchers themselves. There will also be several social events allowing the delegates to get to know each other, both from across the country and from overseas. The conference is taking place from 14-16 April 2011 at the University of Warwick, and more details can be found on our website.
As part of the programme, we are planning a "Careers Event", which will feature a panel of maths PhDs in a diverse range of career paths. They will each give a short talk about how they got to where they are and how they have used their phd in their work. They will then answer questions from the floor. We are currently trying to organise a drinks reception that would follow this, to allow delegates and the speakers to talk on a more personal level.
We would like to invite a representative from GCHQ to be on the panel of this Careers Event. We feel this would enrich our programme and be of interest to our delegates. It would moreover be good publicity for GCHQ to a mathematical audience.
What do you think? Please let us know.
Kind regards,
Barinder Banwait

Email to Warwick Careers
Dear ......
I am writing to you on behalf of 'Young Researchers in Mathematics (YRM) 2011', taking place at Warwick Mathematics Institute on 14-16 April 2011. YRM 2011 is a 3-day conference run by and aimed at doctoral and post-doctoral researchers within the broad area of Mathematics. The conference aims to facilitate networking and collaboration between early career research mathematicians from different institutions, forming working relationships which will persist into the future.
We are currently trying to organise a drinks reception that would follow this, to allow delegates and the speakers to talk on a more personal level. So far, representatives from Winton Capital and GCHQ have agreed to be on the panel.
Since a large proportion of our delegates will be Warwick mathematics PhD students we would like to ask if Warwick Student Careers would be interested in supporting the event? For example, you could sponsor the drinks reception after the event. We would be happy to open the event up to any Warwick postgraduate mathematics student.
We note that we have received £500 from Warwick RSSP. This was a grant for student-led conferences and is not sponsorship for the careers event.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Steven Hill
