Event Information

In this event, co-hosted by Prof Jackie Hodgson (co-director COPR, Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof School of Law), Dr Rachel Lewis (Research fellow, School of Law), and Sharda Murria (Lecturer in Criminology & Policing, Birmingham City University), we bring together a group of academics and a serving police officer to reflect on policing in the UK.

With public trust and confidence in the UK police at a historic low, amplified by individual instances of police brutality and malpractice and by the findings of systemic racism and discrimination in the recent Casey Review, we ask firstly how we might understand policing – as an organisation, as a ‘culture,' as a set of practices and technologies; and secondly how we might seek to effect change in policing practice going forward - embedding learning, sharing best practice, and drawing on innovative arts-informed interventions.

Speakers

Dr Mike Rowe (Liverpool University) will talk about disassembling police culture, as explored in his recently-published book.

Jamie Hobday (serving WMP officer, currently undertaking a professional doctorate) will discuss his doctoral research on the institutional logics of policing and the consequences for police engagement with vulnerable communities.

Prof Jackie Hodgson and Dr Rachel Lewis (School of Law, Warwick University) will discuss their current research into arts-based interventions for effecting change in police practice.

Sharda Murria (Birmingham City University) will consider the possibilities for embedding learning from police Body Worn Video footage through the organisation.
