Director

Professor Michael Saward

I joined Politics and International Studies at the University of Warwick as Professor in Politics in October 2012, and became Director of the Warwick ESRC Doctoral Training Centre in October 2013. I taught and researched at the Open University for twelve years, and twice served as Head of Department. Prior to the OU I was at Royal Holloway, University of London, for ten years. My key area of research is contemporary democratic theory. In recent years I have focused on the theory of representation – my book The Representative Claim was published by Oxford University Press in 2010. My work on the EU-funded ENACT project will culminate in the publication of the jointly edited (with Engin Isin) book Enacting European Citizenship by Cambridge University Press in 2013. I am currently working on a range of issues, including performance and democratic representation; democratic designs; and the role of political ideas in practical political life.
