In 2007 Loughborough University decided to support the initiative by the Department of Politics, International Relations and European Studies to re-establish the subject area of History within the University. Four new joint honours degrees will be introduced from the academic year 2009-2010. Once these degrees are established it is the Department’s intention to develop History further with both a single honours degree and new taught postgraduate programmes. I joined Loughborough University in late September 2008 to lead this exciting initiative. My most important tasks have been to set up these new Degree Programmes and to steer them through the University approval procedures. Besides this I have focused on student recruitment. What are the challenges and opportunities? My particular focus will be on programme development and teaching initiatives. I will also make broader reflections on the development of the subject history, its ‘gatekeepers’, and the way departments and universities are run.
