After Standards: Australian Historians Grapple with a Compliance/Audit future
The standards debate has engaged the academic community throughout Europe, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific region. In Australia this process began with the May 2009 Australian University Quality Agency paper Setting and Monitoring Academic Standards in Australian Higher Education. Carriage of the process was then placed with the Australian Learning and Teaching Council and its Discipline Scholars. In March 2010 the Discipline Reference Group for the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities was formed ‘to draft and/or review drafts of project-related material, including statements of threshold learning outcomes’. History and Geography were then chosen to be “Demonstration Disciplines.” Through a national consultative process, the National Standards for History were finalised by the end of 2010.
This paper will consider aspects of how Australian historians are approaching the implementation of and compliance with the new standards.
