Oversea Institutional Visit (OIV): Gabriella D'Avino

Gabriella is on the Social Policy Pathway at the University of Birmingham. Her research topic is: “The importance of social networks amongst refugees resettled through the Community Sponsorship scheme and the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme in the UK”. In April and May 2023 she undertook an Overseas Institutional Visit (OIV) at the Centre for Refugee Studies at York University in Canada.

Gabriella presented her research at the Centre for Refugee Studies at York University, receiving valuable feedback. She established connections with scholars and experts in the field of migration, which expanded her network, providing opportunities for future collaborations. She participated in events, engaging with scholars at York University and also at Toronto Metropolitan University, Refugee Hub (University of Ottawa) and Concordia University, learning more about current research on migrants, refugees and sponsorship programmes. Gabriella also attended international conferences and seminars gaining further insights into ongoing studies conducted in Canada and other countries. An unexpected benefit was valuable advice regarding her career going forward.

Gabriella comments:

“My visit has positively impacted both my PhD research and my future career. Firstly by presenting my research and receiving feedback, I had the opportunity to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of my work. The received feedback and suggestions have allowed me to improve my work and prepare for the PhD viva. By establishing connections with scholars and policy advisors in the field of migration, I have also expanded my professional network and made connections which can lead to future collaborations. Additionally, through attending international conferences and seminars, I have broadened my understanding and knowledge of refugees and migrants’ issues as well as of approaches and methodologies employed in the field of migration. Finally, the career advice I received made me more aware of further professional opportunities.”
