Making the familiar strange – observation and ethnographic practice
Tue 11 March 09:00-12:00, George Davies Centre Room 0.37, University of Leicester
During this 3-hour session, we will discuss: the roots of ethnography; its strengths and weaknesses; writing ethnographic notes; issues such as positionality, power, ethics; examples of ethnographic research; and more recent developments. A number of practical activities will assist students to gain a good understanding of conducting ethnography and how to design an ethnographic project.Learning outcomes involve knowledge of the strengths and limitations of ethnographic research methods; knowledge of practical, ethical and methodological considerations in undertaking an ethnographic study related to applied health research; knowledge of the roles/positions available to ethnographers in fieldwork and how this shapes their work; and knowledge of the way ethnographic practice connects with ideas of positionality, power and purpose in qualitative research.

Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement in Health Research

The What, Why, When, Where, and How To of Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement in health research.This class will look at every aspect or PPIE and discuss best practice for carrying it out.
Learning outcomes involve knowledge of what PPIE is, why it is important, when PPIE can take place during the research process, where PPIE is carried out and how to carry out PPIE effectively (recruitment, training and support, recognition, sustainability and maintaining PPIE reps, funding).
