Scientific Background

Research Interests

I am interested in understanding bacterial motor proteins using state of the art imaging methodologies. Currently, I am pioneering the use of MINFLUX to understand bacterial envelope protein machineries in the Webby lab.

Scientific Inspiration

Scientists like Richard Feynman are real inspirations. Although a genius, he treated science like a game or puzzle which I find the best way to enjoy what you're doing but also find the best questions and complete the best research.

Provision of Training

Early on you will have training in core techniques with the expectation that you will quickly take ownership of your project, looking at how best to further your research. I enjoy it when supervisees look for their own "side project" in a topic they are passionate about or bring new methods in to the lab.

Progression Monitoring and Management

At the beginning of the PhD we will figure out how you would like to progress. Usually, this is with frequent meetings early on to set you up with a best practice with meetings becoming more flexible throughout. I take it as my responsibility to spot when a student is stuck and requires help but I am always open to talk about your project.

Communication

I am always available and am quick to reply through Teams or email for longer messages. Weekly meetings, monthly lab meetings and the fact I am in the lab most days means you should never feel like you can't see me, though the expectation is the amount of input from me should decrease throughout the project as you become more independent.

Meetings

PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me at least once per week. These meetings will be a mixture of face-to-face and via video chat or telephone. I am usually contactable for an instant response on every working day.

Work Patterns

The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings) I expect students to manage their own time.

Notice Period for Feedback

I need at least 1 week's notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5,000 words.
