Provision of Training
Depending on your previous experience, you will either be able to work independently from the start or receive technical training by myself and/or other lab members. Training on specialist equipment such as microscopes will be provided either by myself, CAMDU imaging specialists or RTP managers. I expect you to make use of training opportunities, attend and ask questions in talks/webinars, regularly present your data in group and CMCB meetings to improve your subject and wider knowledge and communication skills.
Progression Monitoring and Management
I have high expectations. I want you and the team to be ambitious and successful. The more effort you put in yourself, the more support you can expect from me. I like to be kept up to date, and will expect to see evidence of method development/data generation on a weekly basis. I expect you to come to me when you need help troubleshooting. I am here for advice and guidance to help you reach the goals you set for yourself and I envision for the team.
Communication
My lab is inclusive and I wish for all team members to treat each other with respect independently of their background, age, race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief etc. The team has a WhatsApp group chat with which we regularly communicate during the week and occasionally on weekends. It is practical, but optional to be part of this. We have a lab calendar in which all lab members book their lab time while we work at reduced occupancy, indicate days off, joint meetings and whose week it is to bake cake. We use a shared server for all data and electronic lab books. I am known to email my team/PhD students at all hours of the day and night, however I will not expect you to do the same. I am happy to discuss any issues that are impacting your ability to fulfil your potential or my/our expectations.
PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me:
In a group meeting
At least once per week
In year 1 of PhD study
At least once per week
In year 2 of PhD study
At least once per week
In year 3 of PhD study
At least once per week
These meetings will be face to face and I am usually contactable for an instant response on every working day.
Working Patterns
The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings), I expect students to manage their own time.
Notice Period for Feedback
I need at least 1 week’s notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
