Research Interests

As a clinician scientist my research interests lie in translating science and research into treatments and interventions that have a clinical impact. This interest crosses organically from my clinical specialty of Respiratory Medicine and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease where many patients suffer from frailty and sarcopenia as part of their pulmonary disease and where we have demonstrated that a significant impact on out patients quality of life can be achieved by targeting these systemic aspects rather than their lungs. My current projects include observational studies to better characterise and understand the biological drivers of hospital admission among COPD patients as well as interventional studies targeting muscle loss during and after hospitalisation among these patients.

Scientific Inspiration

Much of my scientific inspiration has come from seeing the successful approach taken by researchers working in asthma and COPD over the last 25 years who identified that within a single disease (e.g. Asthma), specific biological phenotypes could be identified and targeted with novel therapies (biologic agents) guided by easily measurable biomarkers (eosinophils and FeNO). The scale of transformation in care and outcomes delivered for this a large group of patients by this approach has inspired me to ask if we can replicate this model in sarcopenia across the spectrum of patients who suffer the consequence of this disease.
