Provision of Training
On a need-to-know basis - you can't learn everything immediately. Its good to learn by working on research problems (with guidance) if possible.
Progression Monitoring and Management
Relaxed style but I am very much focussed on having the PhD student get good science from their project; a PhD thesis can then follow with surprisingly little stress.
Communication
Weekly meetings are typical; sometimes we have an afternoon on the whiteboard. I rarely make demands over email.
Meetings
PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me at least once per week. These meetings will be face-to-face. I am usually contactable for an instant response on every working day.
Work Patterns
Work in my lab requires being present on site (be it in a laboratory or at a field site) during core hours (or a subset if working part time). I'm actually pretty relaxed but I do think its good for a student to be on campus and working in a communal office during the core of the day most days.
Notice Period for Feedback
I need at least 1 week’s notice (sometimes longer if I am busy) to provide feedback on written work of up to 5,000 words.
