Scientific Background

Research Interests

My research has been focused primarily on two areas:

developing novel computational diffractive imaging techniques (ptychography, 4D STEM) for cryogenic electron microscopy (Cryo-EM), light atomic detecting (O, Li elements), low dose imaging (beam sensitive materials), 3D reconstruction and EM field mapping, which can then tackle characterization challenges across the physical and life sciences, ranging from battery materials to biological macromolecules;
in situ examining atomic structures of advanced materials and their functional properties with an emphasis on complex oxides and two-dimensional materials.

Provision of Training

I will facilitate technical training at the beginning of your PhD. Later I will expect you to be more independently figure out appropriate methods and changes to methodology.

Progression Monitoring and Management

I will expect you to take full ownership of your progression, but I like to be kept up to date, and will always be happy to discuss a plan of action together to keep you on track with your goals on a weekly basis.

Communication

I have an open door policy and I am happy to discuss any issues that are impacting your ability to fulfil your potential or my/our expectations. I am known to email my team/PhD students at all hours as I have a number of international collaborators, however I will not expect you to do the same.

PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me:

In a group meeting

At least once per week

In year 1 of PhD study

At least once per week

In year 2 of PhD study

At least once per fortnight

In year 3 of PhD study

At least once per fortnight

The meetings will be face to face and I am usually contactable for an instant response 3 or 4 days per week.

Working Pattern

The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings), I expect students to manage their own time.

Notice Period for Feedback

I need at least 2 week’s notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words, although students are notified when a longer lead-time may occur.
