Bridging Medicine and Literature: Prof Azra Raza Visits the TIA Centre
The TIA Centre at the University of Warwick was honoured to welcome Prof Azra Raza from Columbia University for two special events on 6–7 January 2025. Renowned as a leading oncologist, author of The First Cell, and a passionate advocate for early cancer detection, Prof Raza's in-person visit was a valuable opportunity for insightful discussions and engagement.
Despite the downfall of snow, the visit began with an evening session on 6 January, titled Rhymes of Healing: Bridging Poetry & Medicine. Held at The Oculus Auditorium, the session explored the profound connection between poetry and healing. Drawing on her deep appreciation of Urdu and English poetry, Prof Raza captivated the audience with reflections on how poetry fosters resilience, empathy, and solace for both patients and doctors.
The following morning, Prof Raza delivered a seminar as part of the TIA Centre Seminar Series on Redefining Hope: The Early Detection Revolution in Cancer Care. Speaking to an engaged audience over morning pastries and coffee, she presented her transformative vision for cancer care, focusing on the revolutionary concept of the "First Cell". She highlighted groundbreaking advancements in early cancer detection, such as implantable biosensors designed to monitor and neutralise potential “first cells” in real time, preventing cancer before has develops. Her talk also emphasised the importance of making early detection technologies accessible worldwide, particularly in underserved communities.
This visit was particularly welcome by the TIA Centre, as Prof Raza had previously delivered an online seminar in May 2022. Having her visit in person this time allowed for richer engagement and further strengthened her connection with the Warwick community. Attendees also enjoyed the chance to have copies of The First Cell signed by Prof Raza.
Both events provided thought-provoking and moving discussions. The poetry session offered an insightful perspective on the intersection of literature and medicine, while the seminar explored new directions in cancer prevention and detection. Prof Raza’s expertise and engaging approach encouraged valuable conversations among attendees.
